About the Job:
This is skilled, journeyman level, work in the maintenance and repair of automotive and truck fire equipment.
Work involves responsibility for keeping city fire apparatus and other assigned equipment in good running order, and when repairs are needed in returning the equipment to service quickly and economically. It involves skilled tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of automobiles, fire engines, aerial ladders, elevating platforms, pumps, hydraulic lifts, air packs etc, and other standard trade practices. Work includes keeping track of a maintenance schedule for in and contracted out of shop repairs and maintenance. The incumbent will be responsible for managing the equipment maintenance program and directs the work of assigned subordinate personnel. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Chief of Services, and is subject to inspection while in progress and upon completion.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum four years verifiable professional experience as an equipment mechanic and a minimum of two years verifiable professional experience in heavy duty truck and diesel repair.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within 90 days a valid Commercial drivers license with the necessary required endorsements as prescribed by Law.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Shall possess an E.V.T. ASE level three certification within five years of employment and maintain such certification for the duration of employment.
- Shall possess HAZ/MAT certification within one year of hire.
- Shall possess HAZ/MAT operations certification within one year of hire.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Familiarity with the following: industrial type transmissions; fire apparatus; NFPA & IFSTA fire apparatus standards and air packs. A current E.V.T. certification is highly desired.

EXAMINATION STEPS
- There will be a pre-screening of all applications.
- Responses to the supplemental questionnaire and the resume will be reviewed together to generate a single combined score, which will be blind-rated and weighted at 10%.
- Top-scoring applicants will be called to an oral panel interview (weighted 90%) Interviews will be in person and tentatively scheduled for May 21st, 2026.
- All vacancies in this job class will be filled from the ranked Civil Service register established from the examination process for 12 months.
IMPORTANT NOTES
- A passing grade of 70.00 or higher is required on all parts of the screening process for placement on the ranked Civil Service eligible register.
- The examination process is designed to sample and measure the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Applicants claiming veterans’ preference points in accordance with RCW 41.04.010 as amended and meeting eligibility criteria must submit form DD214, or its equivalent or successor discharge paperwork, that characterizes his or her service as qualifying discharge as defined in RCW 73.04.005.
- Extensive background checks will be conducted.
